On November 5, 1950, Gary Christopher Fisher was born in New York City and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of the contemporary mountain bike.
Fisher began participating in road and track events when he was 12 years old. His participation in the marathon was halted in 1968 because race officials cited a regulation that his hair was too long as the reason. By 1972, this restriction had been abolished, and Fisher’s professional career had been able to continue. He was victorious in the TransAlp event in Europe as well as the Masters XC national championship.
Fisher rode his Schwinn Excelsior X bicycle to work in 1975, which he had purchased in the 1930s. Drum brakes, motorcycle brake levers and cables, and triple chainrings were among the improvements he included to the model, all of which were sourced from “junkers” Fisher discovered in bike stores. After that, Fisher competed in the Repack downhill event, which was sponsored by Fisher’s college roommate, Charlie Kelly. A winding downhill course on Pine Mountain near Fairfax, California, just north of San Francisco, was utilised in this competition, and riders had to repack the burning hubs with grease after each lap since their coaster brakes were used so extensively. Fisher had the fastest time on the Repack course, clocking in in 4:22.
